This research has developed methodology for blood and tissue assessment of nutrition (e.g .omega 3 fatty acids and
carotenoids), and this unique analytical process is used to support the clinical trials conducted by the Macular Pigment Research Group and the cognitive function research.

This research involves many studies, but mainly LEAF (Lutein Algae Feasibility), CARES (Cognitive Impairment Study), TILDA (The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing) and the meso-zeaxanthin study. These studies comprise of analysis on high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to determine quantities of carotenoids in blood samples and animal and algae products.
